Things to do in Gisborne

Surfing and other watersports

Gisborne is known as ‘Surf City’ thanks to its quality surf all year round. Surfing is a big part of the local culture and people flock here from around the world to sample the area’s many and varied breaks. Swimming, kayaking, waka racing, sailing, and surf lifesaving are all popular during the long summer season and Gisborne often hosts national competitions for these sports.

Wine and wineries

Traditionally the predominance of chardonnay grapes earned Gisborne the title of New Zealand’s ‘Chardonnay Capital’. But now the district offers a diverse mix of varieties and styles. You’ll find excellent local Gewürztraminer, Semillon, Chenin Blanc, Pinot Gris and Viognier. Red varieties include Merlot, Malbec and Pinotage. A number of boutique vineyards offer tastings and tours.

Restaurants and cafes

Our motel overlooks the wharf and marina district that’s transformed in recent years into a hub of restaurants, cafes and bars. Enjoy a bottle of local wine as you take in the views.

Attractions and landmarks

Take a walk up Kaiti Hill for spectacular views over Gisborne, Poverty Bay and out to Young Nick’s Head. At the foot of the hill the Cook Monument marks the spot where Captain Cook and his crew first met Maori in 1769.

Arboretum and gardens

35km from Gisborne is Eastwoodhill Arboretum – a world famous collection of gardens, ponds and exotic trees. Gisborne’s botanic garden and the rose garden on Fitzherbert Street offer a pleasant stroll a short distance from your motel.

Fishing and hunting

Our district boasts some of the best fishing and hunting in New Zealand. Trophy sized trout are often caught in the rivers and lakes nearby and the world famous Lake Waikaremoana is only two hours drive away. Deep sea fishing charters are also available, while deer and wild pig are plentiful during the hunting season.

Beaches

Just a 10 minute walk from Senator Motor Inn you’ll find the beautiful Waikanae and Midway beaches. The world famous surf beach Wainui is an easy 10 minute drive away.

Swimming pools

The Gisborne Olympic pool complex is within walking distance and offers lane swimming, diving boards and hydro slides for the kids.

Golf

Poverty Bay Golf Club is a five minute drive away and they welcome casual players.

Museum and art galleries

Tairawhiti Museum showcases local history, arts and crafts. Explore early Maori artefacts, European settler history and contemporary arts and crafts. The Toihoukura Gallery exhibits the work of emerging artists studying Maori arts at Tairawhiti Polytechnic.
